PROFILE

Gary Rogers is one of Europe´s leading garden photographers, his images are used by magazines and book publishers throughout the world. Born in New Zealand his first influences in art came from his Father who was a keen amateur film maker, and his mother who was an accomplished painter. While serving as a professional fireman in his hometown Christchurch, he became fascinated by the world of photography. This led to him leaving the fire brigade to learn the craft under the Hungarian master John Ambrose. Later, Gary started his own studio, as well as being a musician. He was selected to be tour photographer in New Zealand for many of the star acts including Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield, and The Beatles, as well as photographing many of NZs top pop groups. He was Invited to Germany, representing New Zealand, to attend an international photographic seminar, and found the scene so interesting he decided to stay for a few years. He started work in the then world famous experimental "Constanze Atelier" and together with a Swiss, and an Italian colleague, as a team, won several European prizes for advertising campaigns. From here he was invited to join the staff of Europe´s largest interior magazine "Schoener Wohnen" based in Hamburg Germany. After three years he took a break, moved to Norway and worked as photographer with a very small team of five people, re launching an older traditional magazine "Nye Bonytt". Such was their success that inside a year this became one of the top lifestyle magazines in Scandinavia. After two years in this beautiful country, with which he still has very strong ties, he was contacted by "Schoener Wohnen" who asked him to return.

This he did and eventually took up the post of chief photographer working for the four lifestyle magazines of the large publishing house of Gruner & Jahr, "Schoener Wohnen", "Haeuser", "Living at home", and "Decoration". He traveled the world shooting stories on architecture, interiors, travel, food, gardens and studio productions photographing a vast range of subjects from luxury lofts in New York, to nomad tribes in Africa. Over the years the garden section of the magazines kept growing and he found a great interest in this subject. So much so that in 2003 he retired from "Schoener Wohnen" and started his own company "Garden Visions". In 1998 he received an assignment to photograph the world famous castle garden of "Chatsworth" over 14 months, for a book together with the then Duchess of Devonshire, Deborah Devonshire, forming a friendship which still lasts after many years. This best selling book won him the prize of Garden Features Photographer of the Year at the prestigious Garden Media Guild awards ceremony held in the Savoy hotel London in 1999. Today he travels the world photographing gardens for magazines and book publishers, ( he has some 25 books using his photos exclusively ) and has won many awards for his work, As well as acting as a judge for several European leading garden shows, he is a foundation member of the worldwide "Professional Garden Photographers Association" of which he is at present chairman, a member of the Professional photographers institute of New Zealand, and one of the original team which form the photo agency "The Garden Collection" based in London. Gary lives in Hamburg Germany with his wife Karin, a well known photo editor, and their two daughters Jaana and Nadja.
